Amentum War Javelin: Primitive Atlatl Killer?
Просмотров 37 тыс.2 года назад
The Javelin is a primitive weapon that predates the Atlatl spear thrower. But while Atlatl darts disappeared from Eurasia thousands of years ago, the Javelin, also known as war darts, remained in widespread use up until the 19th century. Today, I want to share some observations as to why this is the case. First let's talk about Construction The javelin shaft needs to be relatively straight, aro...

Staff Sling: Savage weapon with fist sized stones!

The Staff Sling or Fustibalus is a fearsome primitive weapon that is capable of hurling fist sized stones with surprising accuracy. First a few construction Tips: 1. For me, it is around 50 inches. Making the staff longer seem...
Atlatl Spear Thrower : Worst primitive survival weapon?

Primitive Bo Shuriken Throwing Spikes: Deadly accurate hunting weapon!

The Primitive Bo Shuriken is a wooden throwing spike. It is the predecessor to the steel throwing dart or ninja needle. This weapon was used in pre-agricultural Japan for survival hunting purposes. 150ft??? - Both Roman and Greek writers say that the sling could out-range the bow. The advantage of range is repeatedly stressed. This could, it seems to me, be because the sling had a greater effective range, arrows losing their power to air-resistance after a while, and falling out of control onto their target, whereas a sling stone might build up a more dangerous speed just from falling. The effective range of slings seems to be in excess of 360 yards. Assyrian reliefs show slingers attacking cities from further away than the archers. Perhaps this is because the archers were used to shoot straight at defenders on the walls, while slingers dropped stones into the city, or perhaps it is just another clue to the greater range of slings.

    • @WannabeBushcrafter
      @WannabeBushcrafter 18 дней назад

      Thanks for watching! I just want to clarify that the 150 feet effective range observation is for consistent/accurate hits on torso sized targets like a wolf or a person. The maximum range of the sling is many times further. For example, I'm able to sling stones out to ~700 feet with my long sling. Of course at that range, I can't reliably hit a target the size of a house.

    • @WannabeBushcrafter
      @WannabeBushcrafter Месяц назад

      Thanks for watching! That was a survival bow was made from unseasoned green wood. It was never meant to take down anything bigger than small birds, frogs, rabbits...etc. Also after experimenting with this design for some time, these bows usually don't last more than a few hundred shots. I think if you had to rely on the bow for survival hunting it would be a good idea to craft the survival bow, but also in parallel harvest the stave of a long term bow and put that into a cool dry place to season for a month.

      Thanks for watching! My understanding is that people used javelins effectively in a form of cooperative hunting where dozens, sometimes hundreds of men with the aid of dogs(and sometimes body shields) would drive game into a kill zone and turn them into pin cushions at close range with these javelins. This type of hunting was documented pretty extensively in the 19th and 20th centuries in primitive communities in Africa and Oceania. This kind of hunting was also written about in antiquity.

      Thanks for watching! Everything that I read about the Javelin's use in ancient warfare seems to indicate a kind of asymmetric role for this weapon. Cheap Javelins were used to disable expensive chariots and horses. It was way easier to equip and train a Peltast with Javelins then to produce an experienced archer or Slinger. During the bronze/Iron Ages at least, the Peltast had a significant advantage over both the Archer and Slinger due to having a body shield. So he could get really close to these other unarmored or lightly armored missile troops and take them out with the Javelin.

    I live somewhere that continues to use atlatls for a long time after other places had stopped. Looking at the plants that grow here i wonder if the change was that in harder conditions the thicker trees, even sapplings, didnt grow as well as smaller scrub like ones. So a weapon that took more skill to make but could use smaller trees and/or branches and the use of fire to straighten them was favored. Then when places warmed and growing conditions most places allowed for better tree growth it was dropped for the old theowing spears again exept in scrub lands without easy access to the right materials.

    • @WannabeBushcrafter
      @WannabeBushcrafter Месяц назад

      That's a very interesting theory. I often wonder if it was a combination of different factors that resulted in the abandonment of the atlatl in a particular area. And it could be that the combination of factors were different depending on the region. For some places it could be the lack of appropriate game or materials, for other places it could be the availability of more effective weapon designs.

    You don't know what you're talking about. Throwing sticks are carefully sculpted into an airfoil such that as the stick flies through the air, the lift generated by the airfoil forces it to fly a straight path. Any unbalancing of the stick makes it curve off to the side. That's why boomerangs come back to you. Boomerang is just the Australian word for any blunt wooden weapon.
